The vocal scores include one French edition by Choudens, Paris (1879?, pl. no. A.C. 3825); two English editions by Cramer, London (1879?, pl. no. J.B.C. & Co. 7801, J.B.C. & Co. 7807) and Ditson, Boston (c1881); and one German edition by Choudens, Paris (185-?, pl. no. A.C. 4549). Two copies of the Ditson edition are arranged as stage manager's guides. The piano score was published by Choudens, Paris (1879?, pl. no. A.C. 4441), the arrangement being by C. Genet. It contains uncut pages. The orchestra parts are manuscript, hardbound, and bear the property stamp of Fred Solomon. The vocal parts are in English, made up of bound pages cut out of Ditson vocal scores. The libretto is in German, published in Berlin. The promptbooks include one German manuscript book, four typed English books, 12 books in English of mimeoed manuscript, nine of which are unbound and one incomplete, and four English manuscript books. Of the latter one is in three volumes and is marked "Melville version," one is marked "De Angelis version," and one bears the stamp of Fred Solomon and contains a playbill glued into the front cover for the July 13, 1891 production of the work by the Pauline Hall Comic Opera Co. of the New York Theatre. The cast is listed. The dialogue parts include one English manuscript part, 12 English typed parts, 22 parts comprising two sets of unbound mimeoed parts in English, and five German manuscript parts.

Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880) was a German-born French composer and cellist of Jewish ancestry. He had a strong influence in popular music in Europe, and was one of the originators of the operetta, of which he wrote more than one hundred. His works were noted for their elements of satire and parody; two for which he is particularly known are the operetta Orpheus in the Underworld and the opera The Tales of Hoffman .
